dcterms.abstract | African swine fever (ASF) is a viral, contagious disease of domestic pigs and wild
boars and since its first confirmation in 2007 in Georgia has been in constant
expansion in Europe. Indeed, almost every year, the disease is diagnosed in a new,
until then ASF free European state. Actually, out of 50 independent states located on
the old continent (several countries are geographically located also on other
continents, for example, Armenia), a total of 16 countries officially confirmed the
presence of the African swine fever virus (ASFV). Having in mind that in 2017 and
2018 the presence of ASFV was confirmed in neighbouring countries of the Republic
of Serbia (RS) (2017 Romania, 2018 Hungary and Bulgaria), it can be said that the
epizootic situation at the beginning of 2019 is extremely unfavourable. Having in
mind that the disease was diagnosed in the wild boars (Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania)
and domestic swine population (Romania) of the neighbourhood countries, the
Veterinary Directorate ordered the implementation a set of control, preventive
measures to be applied in the country but also at border crossings. Also, the Forestry
Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management in
accordance with the existing veterinary and hunting regulations and the current
epizootiological situation, within the framework of the Instructions to the users of the
hunting grounds prescribed some additional measures and procedures. In addition,
the members of the Expert Group from the Scientific Veterinary Institute "Novi Sad"
have prepared a risk analysis and presented a proposal of a new strategy that includes
a set of preventive measures with potential application in border municipalities with
Romania, in addition to already existing measures in order to prevent or postpone the
introduction of ASF into RS. The aim of the paper is to review the epizootiological
situation in Europe and to analyse the proposal additional preventive and control
measures in Republic of Serbia in order to try to prevent, postpone further spread of
the disease. | En |
