Treatment of infection caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus
pseudintermedius (MRSP) has become a real challenge in veterinary practice because
MRSP is often resistant to different classes of antibiotics. We examined 312 nasal
swabs from 156 clinically healthy dogs (from both nostrils) for the presence of MRSP
strains, as well as their sensitivity to other antibiotics. Antibiotic susceptibility was
tested according to the guidelines of the European Committee for Antimicrobial
Susceptibility Testing – EUCAST, and confirmation of methicillin resistance was
done by detection of mecA gene by PCR method. Of the 312 nasal swabs, MRSP was
isolated from 17 swabs (5.44%), which in addition to methicillin resistance were also
resistant to fluoroquinolones, aminoglycosides, trimethoprim, sulfonamides,
chloramphenicol, tetracyclines, macrolides and lincosamides. The results of our study
show that clinically healthy dogs can be carriers of multidrug-resistant MRSP strains,
and thus reservoirs of these zoonotic pathogens for humans.
