The base of herd health management are preventive measures where vaccination may
play an important role. However, for immunoprophylaxis in exact herd limitation
could be commercial vaccine availability with desirable antigen and also the
possibility of antigens diversity of same pathogens what can diminish of the
effectiveness of the commercial vaccine in a certain population. In that case, the
solution is the use of autogenous vaccines, vaccines prepared from microorganisms
isolated in certain populations and intended for use in the same populations. The key
point for use of the autogenous vaccine is the correct determination of microbiological
etiology for the disease of interest, which, considering the multifactorial nature of the
disease can be challenging. For autogenous vaccine, the most important pathogen in
disease etiology should be determined. Possibility of the combination of different
antigens important for one farm in one vaccine is a special benefit of autogenous
vaccine, considering farm technology, animals flow in farm and category of animals
which need to be immunized (e.g. good colostrum quality achieving). Experience
showed that autogenous vaccine using appropriate antigen improves health status,
lowers losses, and also reduces antibiotic use which is an additional benefit
considering the decrease in the development of antimicrobial-resistant strains.
